A new study in Cell Reports has pinpointed 20 human gut commensals—including Klebsiella aerogenes, Morganella morganii, and several Clostridia species—that convert 5-HTP into bioactive serotonin.
These “serotonin-making bugs” were found to:
✅ Carry a conserved tryptophan decarboxylase operon
✅ Promote a 35% denser network of enteric neurons in mice
✅ Accelerate colonic motility via the 5-HT4 receptor
✅ Act as local endocrine factories, sculpting the enteric nervous system
