As Klebsiella pneumoniae silently colonizes the human gut—often before causing severe, drug-resistant infections—the need for non-antibiotic therapies has never been more urgent.

A recent landmark study in Nucleic Acids Research, KlebPhaCol: a community-driven resource for Klebsiella research identified a novel phage family,” brings new hope. Researchers assembled and characterized 52 lytic phages—including the newly proposed family Felixviridae—and tested them against 74 clinically relevant strains spanning 20 sequence types and 19 capsule loci.

Through host-range profiling, growth curves, and CRISPR-spacer analysis, the team built an interactive, open-access database—KlebPhaCol—that transforms fragmented phage data into a systematic, community-expandable platform.

Now, labs worldwide can match a patient isolate with a target phage in silico within minutes, accelerating both research and compassionate-use therapy. The platform also highlights gut-specific phages that could help prevent colonization before infection escalates.
