Unlocking Nature’s Palette: How RNA-seq Revealed the Secret Behind Grasshopper Coloration!
For decades, field guides have shown green and brown morphs of the alpine club-legged grasshopper side-by-side—yet the genetic key to this natural color balance remained a mystery.
Now, in a groundbreaking study published in Molecular Ecology, researchers built the first chromosome-level genome of Gomphocerus sibiricus and used replicated RNA-seq on age-matched green vs. brown adults to filter out false positives.
The result? Only six transcripts—all encoding beta-carotene-binding proteins (βCBPs)—were consistently up-regulated in green morphs. Comparative genomics showed these genes duplicated before the Caelifera radiation and are absent in crickets and katydids, pointing to a novel, suborder-specific mechanism for green camouflage!
