Exciting breakthrough in green agriculture! A pivotal study by Guizhou University’s Entomology Institute, published in *Journal of Nanobiotechnology*, reveals how nanotechnology is paving the way for sustainable pest control.
The team developed innovative silicon-coated carbon quantum dots (SiO₂@CDs) nanocomposites to activate natural pest resistance in tobacco—a crop vital to both industry and medicine. Compared to traditional methods, this approach is eco-friendly and highly effective. Through advanced transcriptomic & metabolomic analysis, the research showed SiO₂@CDs:
- Strengthen physical defense via silicon accumulation
- Activate chemical defense through salicylic acid synthesis
- Boost antioxidant enzyme activity to reduce oxidative stress
- Achieved 71% aphid adult mortality within 7 days at 100 mg/L!
Importantly, the nanomaterial demonstrated high biosafety for non-target organisms (earthworms, zebrafish, ladybugs) and human cells—making it a promising and responsible solution for crop protection.
