A groundbreaking study published in Advanced Science titled ”Splicing Factor PQBP1 Curtails BAX Expression to Promote Ovarian Cancer Progression” unveils a critical mechanism driving cancer development! 

Researchers discovered that PQBP1 —a splicing factor typically active in the central nervous system—is overexpressed in ovarian cancer. Using cutting-edge techniques like spyCLIP-seq and RNA-seq, the team found that PQBP1 binds to exon regions, forcing exon skipping in the BAX gene. This results in a truncated, non-functional BAX protein that is quickly degraded, making cancer cells resistant to apoptosis.

Therapeutic Hope! By reducing PQBP1 levels or using splice-switching antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs), scientists successfully restored BAX expression, slowing tumor growth . This highlights PQBP1’s oncogenic role and positions it as a promising therapeutic target!
