Metabolomics Supports New Insights into Microgravity-Induced Gut–Brain Axis Dysfunction

Long-term spaceflight under microgravity poses persistent challenges to astronaut health, including cognitive decline and anxiety. While many studies have focused on physiological and neurological changes, the gut–brain axis has emerged as an important pathway for understanding how microgravity may affect brain function.

A recent study published in Gut Microbes by a research team from Fourth Military Medical University, titled “Simulated microgravity induces cerebral dysfunction by disturbing protective microbiota-metabolite-microglia signaling across the gut-brain axis”, provides new insights into this mechanism. The study demonstrates that simulated microgravity can disrupt brain function by interfering with protective microbiota–metabolite–microglia signaling across the gut–brain axis.

Importantly, the study identifies linoleic acid (LA) as a promising intervention with the potential to repair both intestinal and cerebral damage, opening new possibilities for protecting astronaut health during long-term spaceflight.
